As generations evolves along came technology to a point of “15person to 1 laptop” into a “1 person is to one laptop” and came the internet which took business to another level, being able to globalize and maximize the range of market and even at safety and comfort of your home.
Business is a dog eat dog world, that’s why there is a saying such as “business is business” there are no friends in business, not even family fits in business world, and once you take a step inside the business and put up your own, then everyone could be your market yet again everyone becomes your enemy at the same time, every time you sell your item and a customer purchases it you open your self to a cliff weather you don’t know if the customer will approve of this item or reject it. Both can again boost your business reputation and at the same time attack your reputation and without proper orientation or no be prepared of this attack, then this little bump could be the downfall of your business.
The era of blogging is going globally as form of freedom of speech or expression through the internet, online sites that cater this blogs offer them to everyone to read and since almost everyone has a laptop or has an access to a computer everyone could easily read this blog. There are no limitation or restriction to this public expressions and thus can cause massive damages to a company’s reputation. Yes it may not seem to be as important as much big of a deal but trust me my friend every single factor counts.
This is a personal example of a business unprepared to this kind of attack, a friend of mine, Carl started his own business as a buy and sell/ retailer of automotive parts, his medium of transactions is through online forums and ebay, one unknown person inquired and have unproven declared that Carl’s items are from the gray market or china made, first he just ignored it and since it is a public forum, then the post of the person declaring “gray market” items can’t be deleted, his customers started to question him and went in rage, his irrational actions to argue with unknown person in the forums leads to the down fall of the business literally. the only thing he had left to do is to start another business and start all over again, change of number change of email ads everything. In a society that demands perfection, a system of accuracy, crab mentality and low economy business just got harder and added 4 more steps to success.
The example of the paper show even your self could be your enemy in business such as little mistakes, in the paper the almost perfect apple company, the juggernaut of techs and mp3 for almost 30years of perfection, its brick wall was pierced not by sony, Toshiba, nokia, Motorola or even Microsoft but by its own loyal customers and a few blogs that started all other revolts of its actions, thinking that people where just ripped off of the1st gen release of the apple “iphone” in 2007 selling for $599 but didn’t matter at all to the buyer because it was worth every penny but the sudden drop of price just to level the iphone to other products was just an irrational move for apple where people think that they where fooled with the first sales resulting to 5% drop to its sales just for the day! Imagine that.
I personally find the instructions provided in the book very useful, a step by step procedure on how to control the situation and dominate w/o leaving a scratch in your reputation. “check your facts” a most common mistake business owners do, after reading or hearing about rumors that someone is trashing your companies rep automatic you act by your anger and do something harsh that would further support accusations towards your company. After the attack, take time to think things over, let your anger subside and “have a legitimate reason for being upset” and “ how damaging might the information be” go through details and compare, look for facts and add-ons and must always remember they are still customers and any harsh actions would cause a chain reaction.
“seek trusted advice” at this point you begin to have doubts about yourself so what you need is opinion of people whom you could trust and share the details of the events, and people who could see your point of view and your dilemma at the same time also see through the public’s point of view because in this situation both your market and your company is a victim.
“check potential damages” do not be rash at actions, after checking facts evaluate the damages it could do to your company, and after evaluating then calculate and adequate action to reverse the effect of the attack and do a proper repair and for you not to over do it, how long will this last, how many saw the attack, is the attack true to others?, etc.
Understand your attacker, as stated not all attackers are made equal, some are new and has minor attacks due to little damages or affect to that single person or being unsatisfied or are virgin attackers, these are people new to your market soo new that the person had a culture shock from his previous item to an apple product. There are also valued customer who are loyal to your brand and had a change of heart due to disappointment to as what the person expected from his brand or where he is use to buying techs such as ipods or apple company itself. But not all are unintentional attacks, we must not forget that apple as a firm and a company has a competitor not to underestimate and some of the attacks are from them or what we call as an undermining attacker, a person in disguise spreading false rumors about the company through the internet, and thus the professional attacker, these are people who blog for a living and some are journalist who digs up dirt for the public to see.
These people are part of a business because for me if you own your own business then you don’t have a closing time because every single second counts once you started your business, you have to sharpen your senses for windows of opportunities and what the business people call “wolves” the attackers and the competitors at some time your own mistakes are your enemy and at the same time your market as well.
Responding to this attackers must be handle with fines and a professional state of being as a business person, keep your cool and stay on top of the game, in order to do that you must make a response from the top, evaluate the potential harm the attack could be and consult the top postiton or your personal board for you to have an open idea of what to do, admit mistakes and apologize it is important that you lower your head and admit your fault to the public and you take full responsibility of what happened to lower the number of offended persons or markets, host a conversation or have a medium for you to speak out to the public or fight fire with fire, post it on the internet where the public could see it, seek a resolution for your market and last turn the detractors to evangelist where instead to spread bad things about your company they could blog about the good comeback of your company this way you could turn the table to the publics eyes and use your attackers as an weapon for your use to aline the public with you guys.
Done with your attacker you must turn your attention back to your company and do a clean up, the blogs the attacker made to you are still existing and may be a future source of another revolt against your company, this clean ups may be done by your detractors thus you must talk to them to change things and bring them back to normal, talk to google/yahoo for a clean-up of search filters that may dig up again your attackers blog. Monitor your cookie crumbs or small issues that may turn big in the future. Make use of your supporters and have them blog about the positive side of your company, good bloggers and good journalist the do blogs regarding good things about your company. Watch out for urban legends or bad rumors bloggers predicts and assume these are controversial issues that yet again not to be feared because these are just rumors. You must also open up to the public not just your good bloggers but your self and tell your side of the story to the public to share a point of view.
Now because of this incidents you firm or board had just lost it trust on you and your company so proper precautions must be done, learn from your mistakes, clean up your company, and come up with something new to impress your board and make up for your flaw, share this ideas to them to get their attention back to you, apologize, be transparent, be open and show your sincerity to your board, firm, staff and your company because a good company is only good when it has a good owner.
